What type of work can be done with the Kansas Building Contractor license?

Licensed Contractor in Kansas
  • Class A General Contractor License

    Class A licensees may construct, remodel, repair, and demolish any structure. Licensees and their full-time employees may perform framing, roofing, swimming pool construction, non-structural remodeling, tenant finish, or repairs of all structures. Class A licensees may not perform HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or fire protection work.

  • Class B Building Contractor License

    Class B licensees may construct, remodel, repair, and demolish all structures under 3 stories in height. Licensees and their full-time employees may perform framing, roofing, swimming pool construction, non-structural remodeling, tenant finish, or repairs of all structures under the height limit.

  • Class C Residential Contractor License

    Class C licensees may construct, remodel, repair, and demolish single-family or duplex residences. Licensees and their full-time employees may perform framing, roofing, swimming pool construction, and non-structural remodeling or repairs on single family or two-family dwellings.

What are the requirements for getting a building contractor license in Kansas?

Kansas Contractor RequirementsJohnson County

  • Submit application.
  • Pay the application fee and the license fee.
  • Provide proof of General Liability and Worker's Compensation insurance.
  • Possess one of the two following qualifications:
    • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Science, or Construction Management from an ABET or ACCE accredited program.
    • or

    • A score of at least 75% on the ICC Kansas Standard General Building Contractor (A, B, or C) exam.

Kansas Contractor RequirementsSedgwick County

  • Complete the front and back of the contractor license application, and make sure everyone signs the application (Qualified person, owner/ sole proprietor/ all partners).
  • Provide test results proving a passing score of at least 75% on the ICC Kansas Standard General Building Contractor (A, B, or C) exam.
  • Certificate of liability insurance with at least $300,000 in General Liability.
  • Workers Compensation certificate of insurance.

Kansas Contractor RequirementsShawnee County

  • Submit a General Contractors license application.
  • General Liability Certificate of Insurance.
  • Worker's Compensation Certificate of Insurance.
  • Provide proof of one of the following:
    • At least 30 hours of coursework from an accredited school in Construction Science, Engineering, or Architectural Degrees.
    • or

    • A passing score of 75% or higher on the ICC Kansas Standard General Building Contractor (A, B, or C) exam.

Kansas Contractor RequirementsDouglas County

  • Qualifying party must have at least six years’ Class A building experience, or hold a Class B, Building Contractor license with at least ten years of experience working as a Building Contractor.
  • A policy of commercial general liability insurance written with an insurance company licensed as an admitted insurance company in the State of Kansas.
  • General liability coverage in an amount not less than $1,000,000 per occurrence.
  • Provide Proof of one of the following:
    • A degree in architecture, engineering, or construction science.
    • or

    • A passing score of at least 75% on the Kansas Standard General Building Contractor (A, B, or C) exam.

How do I obtain abuilding contractor license in Kansas?

To apply for your Kansas Building Contractor license, contact the licensing agency for your local city, county, or jurisdiction. You will need to submit a completed application to your local licensing agency to initiate the licensing process.

In some counties, class A, B, and C contractors are required to complete 8 hours of continuing education to renew their license. For the most accurate renewal information, contact your local licensing authority.
