What type of work can be done with this license?

Journeyman Sheet Metal License
A Journeyman sheet metal license allows the holder to perform any work defined as "sheet metal", such as: heating, ventilation, air conditioning, pollution control, fume hood systems and related duct systems or installation of equipment associated with any component of a sheet metal system. Sheet metal excludes refrigeration and electrical lines and all natural gas, propane, liquid propane, or other gas lines associated with any component of a sheet metal system.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Sheet Metal- Must be at least 18 years old
- Provide documentation of any criminal conviction. Applicants with a felony conviction will be subject to a review by the board to determine eligibility
- Completed at least 42 months in an apprentice program registered by the U.S. Department of Labor
OR - At least 4 years of experience
Journeyman Supervision Requirements- Journeymen must work under the supervision of a master licensed in the discipline of the work being preformed in the design, installation, and repair of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC-refrigeration, or hydronic systems
- A Journeyperson may not knowingly perform work covered under Iowa Code chapter 105 for an unlicensed contractor
- A Journeyperson who supervises one or more apprentices may only provide such supervision in the discipline in which they are licensed and only while performing work for a licensed contractor
- A Journeyperson may not knowingly supervise unlicensed persons who perform work for which a license is required
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board at 515-725-6147 or visit the Board Website.
8 hours of continuing education is required for license renewal every 3 years. Also, Iowa has reciprocity agreements with South Dakota for Sheet Metal licenses.

The first step is to obtain pre-approval for your exam. This can be completed submitting an Exam Approval Application online or via paper application. Upon approval, you will be sent instructions on scheduling the examination through the board’s approved testing provider.

How do I pass the exam?
The Iowa exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
The exam prep includes math, theory and calculations, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
