Journeyperson Plumber with Gas
According to the state of Iowa, a Journeyperson Plumber is any person, other than a master, who, as a principal occupation, is engaged as an employee of, or otherwise working under the direction of, a master in the design, installation, and repair of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems, as applicable.

Master Plumber with Gas
A Master Plumber is any person who works in the planning or superintending of the design, installation, or repair of plumbing, Plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems and is otherwise lawfully qualified to conduct the business of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems, and who is familiar with the laws and rules governing the same.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyperson Plumber- Be at least 18 years old.
- Provide documentation of any criminal convictions. Applicants with a felony conviction will be subject to review by the board to determine eligibility for licensure.
- Submit a completed, signed, and notarized application form
- Pass the Iowa Journeyperson Plumbing exam
- Provide the board with one of the following:
- Evidence of having completed at least four years of practical experience as an apprentice AND proof of successfully passing the Iowa journeyperson examination for each trade discipline requested. The four years of practical experience required must be from an apprenticeship training program registered by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship.
OR - Evidence that the applicant possesses a master level license in the same discipline from another jurisdiction.
- Evidence of having completed at least four years of practical experience as an apprentice AND proof of successfully passing the Iowa journeyperson examination for each trade discipline requested. The four years of practical experience required must be from an apprenticeship training program registered by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship.
Master Plumber- Be at least 18 years old.

- Pass the state of Iowa Plumbing and Plumbing Systems Board master licensing examination for the applicable discipline. To be eligible to sit for the exam, you must have either
- A Master license in another jurisdiction; or
- A Journeyperson license with two years of work experience.
- Pay the master level licensing fee.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Iowa Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board at 205-945-4857 or visit Board Website.
8 hours of continuing education is required for license renewal every 3 years. Also, Iowa has reciprocity agreements with South Dakota for Plumbing licenses.

How do I pass the exam?
The Iowa exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
