Roofing Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep
Illinois Roofing Contractor Licenses are split into Limited and Unlimited. Residential Roofing is covered under the Limited license. There are two types of exams for unlimited licenses. There is the Residential / Commercial / Industrial exam and the Commercial / Industrial exam. The Commercial / Industrial exam can only be taken after passing the Residential exam.

Limited Roofing License
Limited Roofing licenses are made available to contractors whose roofing business is limited to residential roofing, including residential properties consisting of 8 units or less.

Unlimited Roofing License
Unlimited Roofing licenses are made available contractors whose roofing business is unlimited in nature and includes roofing on residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Limited Roofing Contractor- Identify the “Qualifying Party” that will take the exam (A qualifying party is the individual who needs to pass the exam).
- Obtain $10,000 Surety Bond
- Obtain insurance
- $250,000 for each occurrence of property damage
- $500,000 for each occurrence of personal injury or bodily harm
- If applicant has employees:
- Worker’s Compensation Insurance
- Unemployment Insurance
- Pass Roofing Contractor Exam

How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation Division of Professional Regulation at 1-888-473-4858 or visit Registrar of Contractors.
The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Illinois has no reciprocity agreements.

A passing score on the exam is required prior to submitting an application. Contact PSI to schedule the examination. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. You must pass the residential exam before you can take the commercial exam.

Which exam do I need to take?
Illinois Contractors must pass two examinations: their Trade and Statutes and Rules exam.
To schedule your exam, visit Continental Testing or call 1-800-560-6420. To take the commercial exam you must first pass the residential exam.
