Electrical Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep
In order to install, alter, or maintain any wiring or equipment in Chicago, you must first obtain an electrical contractor license. Each electrical contracting business must be owned by or employ at least 1 supervising electrician. There are two exams available that will determine the type of license you will be issued: The General Electrical Contractor Exam and the Low Voltage Electrical Contractor Exam. One of these exams must be passed in order to become a supervising electrician.

What type of work can be done with this license?

General Electrical Contractor License
This license allows the business and its employees to perform any type of electrical work, subject to the limitations described in the "requirements" section.

Low Voltage Electrical Contractor License
This license only allows the business and its employees to perform electrical work involving Class 1, 2, and 3 remote-control, signaling, and power-limited circuits and communications circuits.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
General & Low Voltage Electrical License Requirements- Pass one of the two following exams:
- Supervising Electrician Examination
- Supervising Low Voltage Electrician Examination
- Applicant must be at least 21 years old
- 2 years of experience installing, altering, repairing, and maintaining electrical wires, equipment, and apparatuses while under the direct supervision of a supervising electrician or equivalent person
- Work experience must be verified in writing by their supervisors
Employee Requirements- Where class 1 electrical work is being performed, each person performing electrical work for or at the direction of an electrical contractor must be one of the following:
- A licensed supervising electrician
- An individual who has a certificate of completion from a U.S. Department of Labor recognized apprenticeship program requiring at least 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and classroom instruction
- An individual who is currently enrolled in a U.S. Department of Labor recognized apprenticeship program requiring at least 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and classroom instruction
- *The electrical contractor must maintain record of compliance with these requirements for at least 2 years following completion of the job
- Class 2 electrical work must be done under the supervision of the licensed supervising electrician
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, you must submit your application through the Continental Testing Services website. You can also contact them by phone at 800-359-1313.
The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Illinois has no reciprocity agreements.
