What type of work can be done with this license?

Licensed Electrician in Idaho
  • Journeyman HVAC Exam

    The state qualifies a Journey Worker HVAC as any person who performs or supervises the of installation, improvement, extension, alteration, or repair of HVAC systems under the direction of a HVAC contractor.

  • HVAC Contractor License

    Any person or entity providing or offering to provide any service or work including but not limited to installing, maintaining or repairing heating, ventilation or air conditioning appliances, or gas-fired equipment that requires special venting or gas supply piping systems or subsystems.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

Journeyman HVAC RequirementsJourneyman HVAC Out-of-State Applicants
  • Obtain 8 years (16,000 hours) of experience at least equivalent to an HVAC apprentice in Idaho
  • Obtain 4 years (4,000 hours) of equivalent experience and complete 4 years education equivalent to an Idaho board approved HVAC apprenticeship school
  • Submit notarized application
  • Pass the Idaho HVAC Exam

  • Obtain 4 years experience working in the HVAC trade or as an HVAC apprentice performing HVAC installations under the supervision of an HVAC Journeyman
  • Any HVAC apprentice who successfully completes a Board-approved, full-time, one (1)-academic-year HVAC training course may receive credit for up to one (1) year of on-the-job work experience.
  • Submit notarized application
  • Pass the Idaho HVAC Exam

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Idaho Division of Building Safety at 208-334-3950 or visit the board Website.

Journeyman HVACs need 8 hours and HVAC Contractors need 16 Hours of continuing education are requried for each renewal. Also, Idaho Journeyman HVACs have reciprocity agreements with Montana, Oregon, and Washington.

Preparing to pass the State exam is a critical part of the licensing process. Failing the exam can result in substantial delays before you are able to work under your license. We offer industry leading exam prep and all of the required books, at an unbeatable price.

Applicants will have 2 days advance notice prior to taking the exam. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam


After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through DBS to obtain your Idaho HVAC License. Applicants must also submit a $2,000 Compliance Bond in the name of the company. How do I pass the exam?

The Idaho exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.

The exam prep includes math, load calculations, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
