What type of work can be done with this license?

Licensed Electrician in Hawaii
  • Journeyworker Electrician License (EJ)

    The state qualifies a Journeyworker Electrician as any person who has been licensed by the board as a journeyworker electrician to perform electrical work.

  • Electrical Contractor License (C13)

    An Electrical Contractor is able to place, install, erect, or connect any electrical wires, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, electrical signs, conduits, poles, raceways, and to do trenching, backfilling, patching, and surface restoration in connection with the installation of conduits and lines which transmit, transform, or utilize electrical energy less than 600 volts phase to phase. This classification also includes the work of the C-15 electronic systems contractor and C-60 solar power systems contractor.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

  • 5 years’ but not less than 10,000 hours of all aspects of electrical wiring work primarily involved in residential and commercial wiring AND satisfactory completion accepted by a University of Hawaii Community College offering an appropriate program of study of 240 hours of electrical academic coursework.

  • 5 years’ experience for a journeyworker and an extended 2 years for a master license
  • Credit report covering the previous 5 years on each individual applicant
  • A current financial statement prepared and signed by a CPA
  • A current state tax clearance from the Department of Taxation
  • Certificate of insurance for worker’s compensation and certificate from their insurer showing liability coverage for
  • Property Damage - $50,000 per occurrence
  • Bodily Injury - $100,000 per person & $300,000 per occurrence

    How do I pass the exam?

    The Hawaii electrical exam is open book, and based on the 2020 NEC. Our Bundle will include a copy of the NEC 2020 for studying, but the testing agency will provide a copy of the code book to be used during the actual exam. The tabs included in the bundle should be used with your copy of the code book in order to become familiar with the location of the content in the book. Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
