Low-Voltage Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep

Georgia requires all Low Voltage Contractors to obtain a license before any bidding or work can take place. These licenses are administered by the Georgia State Board of Low Voltage Contractors. What type of work can be done with this license?

Electrical Contractor Class II Unrestricted exam details Unrestricted Low Voltage
License (LV-U)

LV-U contractors are unrestricted and may perform any type of low voltage electrical work.

This license includes the scope of the general (LV-G), alarm (LV-A), and telecommunication (LV-T) low voltage licenses.

Electrical Contractor Class II Unrestricted exam details General Low Voltage License (LV-G)

    LV-G contractors are limited to only general low voltage electrical work.

    "General low voltage" means any electrical system other than an alarm or telecommunication system, involving low-voltage wiring, including, but not limited to stand alone intercom systems and call alert systems (audio or visual) distribution wiring for alarm systems and telecommunications systems including local area network systems; sound systems; public address systems; the low voltage side of energy management systems; antenna systems and satellite dish systems, irrigation system wiring; and low voltage lighting.

Electrical Contractor Class II Unrestricted exam details Alarm Low Voltage License (LV-A)

LV-A contractors are limited to Alarm and General low voltage work.

"Alarm system" means any device or combination of devices used to detect a situation, causing an alarm in the event of a burglary, fire, robbery, medical emergency, or equipment failure, or on the occurrence of any other predetermined event.

Electrical Contractor Class II Unrestricted exam details Telecommunications Low Voltage License (LV-T)

LV-T contractors are restricted to telecommunication and general system low-voltage contracting.

"Telecommunication system" means a switching system and associated apparatus which performs the basic function of two-way voice or data service, or both, and which can be a commonly controlled system capable of being administered both locally and remotely via secured access.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

  • To qualify for the exam, the applicant must submit an affidavit which outlines their experience:
    • The applicant must show at least 1 year of installation experience for the category of license they are applying for
    • Applicants for the alarm or telecommunications license must show experience installing these systems
    • Applicants for an unlimited license must show experience installing both alarm and telecommunication systems
    • Describe in detail the low voltage work you performed, your duties, and degree of responsibility
    • Completing courses in electronics through an engineering or trade school can count for up to 6 months of experience
  • List 3 individuals with knowledge of your low voltage experience
    • One of these references must be a licensed low voltage contractor
  • Submit all documents and fees with your complete application
  • Pass Georgia Low-Voltage Contractor exam (pre-approval is required)
