Journeyman and Master Electrician Licensing

Journeyman Electrician
A Journeyman Electrician is qualified to perform electrical work and supervise the work of Electrical Apprentices.

Master Electrician
A Master Electrician is qualified to lay out, direct, and supervise the work of other electricians.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Electrician RequirementsApplicants must meet at least one of the following criteria
- Obtain 4 years (4,000 hours) of working hours as an apprentice electrician under the supervision of an electrician, master electrician, or master electrician specialist, or a contractor qualified under this chapter to receive a license as a master electrician or master electrician specialist
- Performance for at least four (4) years in the United States Armed Services or Merchant Marine of the type of work for which a license is sought
- Satisfactorily attended, at a college or university, a course of electrical engineering for four (4) years: Provided, that the applicant must also show at least one (1) year of practical experience in electrical work
- Have any combination of the above requirements that has been deemed sufficient by the board
Pass the required Journeyman Electrician exam
Master Electrician Requirements- Have not less than four (4) years of experience as a licensed electrician
- Have equivalent experience which may include work in the United States Armed Services or Merchant Marine, or attendance at a college or university in a course of electrical engineering for four (4) years; Provided, that the applicant can show at least two (2) years of practical experience in electrical work.

How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection at 202-671-4500 or visit the DLCP website to submit online.
District of Columbia does not require continuing education for Journeyman and Master Electricians. District of Columbia has no reciprocity agreements for Master or Journeyman Electricians.

How do I pass the exam?
The District of Columbia exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! All reference materials must be bound. Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
The exam prep includes math, theory and calculations, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each reference, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
