Delaware HVACR License and Exam Prep
Master HVACR Licensing
Delaware HVACR licenses are regulated by the State of Delaware Board of HVACR Examiners. They govern licensure for Journey, Master, and Contractor HVACR. Requirements for obtaining each type of license can be found below.

What type of work can be done with this license?

Master HVACR
A Master HVACR can design, install, construct, maintain, service, repair, alter, or modify a product or equipment including gas piping in heating and air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, or process cooling or heating systems.

Master HVACR Restricted
A Master HVACR Restricted can provide HVACR services limited to one of the following specialties:
Heating – Forced Air Systems, Ventilation, and Gas Piping
Heating – Hydronic Systems and Gas Piping
Commercial Hood Systems
Refrigeration
Air Conditioning
Gas Piping
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Master HVACR- Have State/Jurisdiction Licensure Verification sent directly to the Board office from each state or jurisdiction in which you currently hold or have ever held a license.
- Submit a copy of your CFC Certification card
- Proof of your work experience for periods of employment that are required via the Verification of Employment form
- Pass the required Master HVACR exam
Additional RequirementsIf you currently hold a Journeyman Certificate
- Copy of your apprenticeship program Certificate of Completion.
- Proof of at least two years work experience under the supervision of a master licensee after receiving Certificate.
If you do NOT currently hold a Journeyman Certificate
- Submit proof of at least seven years work experience under supervision of a master licensee.
- If approved, you will be notified that you may take the Apprenticeship By-Pass Exam, offered by Delaware apprenticeship schools.
- Pass the required Master Plumber exam AND the Apprenticeship By-Pass Exam
After you receive approval notification, you may call one of the following schools to schedule your test date for the Apprenticeship By-Pass Exam:
- Castle County – New Castle County VoTech (302) 683-3643
- Kent County – PolyTech H.S. (302) 697-4545
- Sussex County – Sussex Tech, Georgetown (302) 856-9035
Master HVACR Restricted- Have State/Jurisdiction Licensure Verification sent directly to the Board office from each state or jurisdiction in which you currently hold or have ever held a license.
- Submit a copy of your CFC Certification card if you are applying for Master HVACR Restricted-Refrigeration or Master HVACR Restricted-Air Conditioning.
- Proof of your work experience for periods of employment that are required via the Verification of Employment form
- Pass the required Master HVACR exam
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Delaware Board of Plumbing, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Examiners at 302-744-4500 or visit the DPR website to submit online.
Delaware does not require continuing education for Master HVACR licenses. Delaware has reciprocity agreements for Master HVACR in Connecticut, Iowa, and Maryland, and limited agreements with Alabama, Arkansas, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia

The first step is to obtain pre-approval for your exam. This can be obtained after creating an account on the DELPROS online portal through the state website and begin the application for licensure. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in Dover-Harrington and Newark.

Which exam do I need to take?
When the Board has reviewed and approved your application, you will receive an email notification stating you have been approved to sit for the exam. You will receive a separate email with the examination registration form.

How do I pass the exam?
The Delaware exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! All reference materials must be bound. Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
