To work as a Limited S-8 Journeyman or S-7 Contractor in Connecticut, you'll need to obtain a license though the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. S-7 Limited Heating Contractor
he holder of this license may perform only work limited to hot water or steam heating systems for buildings not over three stories high with a total heating load not exceeding 500,000 BTU's and steam pressure not exceeding fifteen pounds. This license also covers the servicing and installation of oil burners handling up to five gallons per hour, as well as gas burners and gas piping for the work covered by this license.

S-8 Limited Heating Journeyman
The holder of this license may perform only work limited to hot water or steam heating systems for buildings not over three stories high with a total heating load not exceeding 500,000 BTU’s and steam pressure not exceeding fifteen pounds and only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work. Also covered by this license is the servicing and installation of oil burners handling up to five gallons per hour, as well as gas burners and gas piping for work covered by this license.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
S-8 JourneypersonTo qualify for the S-8 Limited Heating Journeyperson Exam you must first:
- Complete an apprenticeship with the CT Department of Labor
- If you did not complete an apprenticeship with the CT Department of Labor, you must:

- Submit letters from your current / previous employer(s) - Letters must be on company letterhead, dated, and notarized, and must include the dates of employment and a specific, detailed description of your on-the job-training and work experience, including all aspects included in the scope of work you are applying for.
- Submit proof of related instruction - 8,000 on the job training hours & 576 classroom hours
S-7 ContractorTo qualify for the S-7 Limited Heating Contractor Exam you must first:
- Hold a Journeyperson License for at least 2 years and submit a copy of your current Journeypersons license and the date first issued.
- If you already hold an out of state Heating & Cooling Contractor License you must submit:

- Work history and/or resume to include the number of years the journeyperson license requires, and an additional two years of on-the-job training and/or experience.
- Letters from current or previous employer(s). Letters must be on company letterhead, dated, and notarized, and must include the dates of employment and a specific, detailed description of your on-the job-training and work experience, including all aspects included in the scope of work you are applying for.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection at 800-842-2649 or visit Board Website.
No continuing education is required for license renewal. Also, Connecticut has reciprocity possibilities with other boards as long as that board recognizes, as a minimum, the standards prescribed by the board. Check with the board for more details.

How do I pass the exam?
The Connecticut exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
