What type of work can be done with this license?

Journeyman Plumbing License
A Journeyman Plumber has the ability to perform the installation, alteration, repair, and renovation of plumbing. A Journeyman must operate under the supervision of a Master Plumber.

Master Plumbing License
A Master Plumber has the abilities of a Journeyman with the added abilities to plan, lay out, and install and repair plumbing apparatus and equipment including the supervision of such. A Master Plumber may work independently.

Residential Plumbing License
Licensees have the ability to install plumbing and equipment in one-, two-, three-, and four-family dwellings, which shall not extend more than two (2) stories aboveground.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Plumber- The maximum experience the board requires is four (4) years (6,800 hours) of practical experience.
- Submit a completed application and supporting documents to the state board
- Pass the Journeyman Plumbing exam (pre-approval is required)
Master Plumber- An applicant for a master plumber's license must furnish evidence of having obtained five (5) full-time years (8,500 hours) of practical experience.
- Submit a completed application and supporting documents to the state board
- Pass the Master Plumbing exam (pre-approval is required)
Residential Plumber- Must verify two (2) years (3,400 hours) of practical experience.
- Submit a completed application and supporting documents to the state board
- Pass the Master Plumbing exam (pre-approval is required)
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations at 303-894-7800 or visit the Board Website.
On or after May 1, 2021, all licensed Residential, Journeyman, and Master Plumbers must complete eight (8) hours of Continuing Education (CE) each year. Licenses are renewed every odd year. Also, Colorado manages reciprocity arrangements on a case-by-case basis. Check with the board to get the most accurate and up-to-date information.

How do I pass the exam?
The Colorado exams are open book. The references below will be provided to you at the exam center. If you need hard copies to study with before the exam, they are available at a discount with our Colorado Plumbing Bundle.
