The Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors requires applicants to pass two licensing exams. You must pass the NASCLA Commercial General Building Contractor exam and the Alabama Business and Law exam. A General Contractor is someone who is paid to build, supervise, or work on construction projects in the State of Alabama. The projects can include buildings, highways, sewers, structures, site work, grading, paving, or any other improvements. The cost of the project can be fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) or more. If someone meets these criteria, they are considered to be a general contractor in Alabama.

No continuing education is required for renewal. Alabama has reciprocity agreements with Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.
