Commercial Electrical Inspector
A person who holds a certification issued by the Department of Safety and Professional Services as a certified Commercial Electrical Inspector may conduct inspections of public buildings and places of employment for the purpose of administering and enforcing the Commercial Electrical Code
What are the requirements to getting this certification?
Commercial Electrical Inspector Requirements- Examination and Experience
- Submit appropriate application and fees
- Receive eligibility to take exam from Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services and have one of the following:
- At least 1,000 hours per year for at least 6 years of experience in electrical work. If a person has successfully completed semesters in a school of electrical engineering or other accredited college, university, technical or vocational school in an electrical related program, the applicant may claim 500 hours per semester of experience, with no more than 3,000 hours and 3 years of experience, towards the required experience. Upload a copy of transcripts, if applicable.
- At least 1,000 hours per year for at least 3 years of experience in electrical work and has a degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university. Upload a copy of transcripts from the school or university if you have a degree in engineering.
- At least 1,000 hours per year for at least 3 years of experience in electrical work and holds a credential under Wis. Stat. ch. 443 as a registered Professional Engineer, a registered Architect, or a certified Designer of Electrical Systems. Upload a copy of current Wisconsin license.
- Complete and submit proof of passing score on the Wisconsin Commercial Electrical Inspector examination
- Proof of Current Licensure/Certification
- Submit appropriate application and fees
- Upload a copy of one of the following current certifications:
- Wisconsin Master Electrician license
- Electrical Inspector or Commercial Electrical Inspector certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC)
- Master Electrical Inspector certification issued under the International Association of Electrical Inspectors / National Fire Protection Association

How do I obtain a certification?
To apply for your Commercial Electrical Inspector certification, contact the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services at 608-266-2112 or visit their website.
Commercial Electrical Inspector Licenses expire every 4 years on June 30th. To renew, you must complete 24 hours of approved continuing education and submit your renewal to the state. Inspectors are required to complete a total of 24 hours of CE. Wisconsin has limited reciprocity arrangements, check with the board for the most up-to-date information.

Which exam do I need to take?
Applicants have the choice of either taking the trade exam or submitting a copy of an approved license or certification.These Wisconsin Inspector Exams are administered by Pearson VUE or the Department of Safety and Professional Services. To schedule your exam, you must submit an application through DSPS's online LicensE Portal.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers multiple types of code official certifications, each require an exam. We offer courses for all types of ICC certifications. How do I pass the exam?
