They carefully examine the design, layout, and components of mechanical systems, such as HVAC, plumbing, and piping, verifying adherence to code requirements. Their role involves interpreting codes accurately, providing guidance to ensure compliance, and communicating any deficiencies or necessary revisions to ensure the plans meet the necessary standards for approval.
What are the requirements to getting a license?

- Five years of experience as a full-time building inspector or mechanical inspector in a certified non-residential building department, or
- Five years of experience as a full-time residential building official, residential plans examiner, residential building inspector, or residential mechanical inspector in a certified residential building department, or
- Ohio registration as an architect or professional engineer, or
- Ten years of experience as a full-time skilled tradesman for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning ("HVAC") systems and associated refrigeration, fuel gas, and heating piping work, subject to inspection under a code adopted for non-residential buildings, within the scope of groups regulated by the rules of the Board.

Mechanical InspectorExperience Requirements
- Five years of experience as a skilled heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system and associated refrigeration, fuel gas, and heating piping tradesman for work subject to inspection under a code adopted for non-residential buildings, within the scope of groups regulated by the rules of the Board, or
- Five years of experience as a full-time building official, master plans examiner, building inspector, residential building official, residential plans examiner, residential building inspector, or residential mechanical inspector

How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your Code Official license, contact the Ohio Department of Commerce at 614-466-3636 or visit their website.
Licensed Code Officials in Ohio are required to obtain 30 hours of continuing education every renewal cycle. Licenses are to be renewed every three years.

How do I pass the exam?
The exam prep includes math, geometry, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
