Passing the P1 exam earns an ICC certification, but it does not automatically grant you a state or local license. If your jurisdiction requires a license, contact the issuing board for its application, qualification, and renewal requirements before taking the exam.
Continuing education requirements and renewal schedules vary by jurisdiction. ICC certification also has its own renewal requirements. We offer state-approved continuing education for trades across the country.

The first step is to review and understand the requirements for working as a residential plumbing inspector in your jurisdiction. Confirm whether you need a license, which certifications are accepted, and what application requirements apply.
Some jurisdictions may require approval before you test, while others may not. Contact your state or local licensing agency to confirm its requirements. National certification exam information is available in the ICC Exam Catalog.
It's never too soon to start studying for the exam. It covers a broad range of topics. ICC allows six attempts at a certification exam within a six-month period, with an exam fee required for each attempt.
Once you feel comfortable with the content and have passed multiple practice exams, it's time to book your exam. Purchase the P1 exam through your myICC account, then use My Exams to access the available testing options and booking details.
Once you pass the exam, your certification will appear in your myICC account after your results are processed. If your jurisdiction requires a license, submit your application and the required documentation to the issuing board.
You will be tested on applying plumbing code requirements to installations in residential buildings, including fixtures, water heaters, water supply and distribution, sanitary drainage, and vents. The exam uses the International Residential Code (IRC) for your selected code edition.
Topics include:
| Exam ID | Prerequisite Exam/Certification(s) |
| B1 | Residential Building Inspector |
| E1 | Residential Electrical Inspector |
| M1 | Residential Mechanical Inspector |
| P1 | Residential Plumbing Inspector |
NOTE: To obtain the Residential Combination Inspector (RCI) Certification, completion of the four Residential Inspector certifications is required. ICC does not recognize prior inspector certifications issued by any of the model code organizations (MCO) as equivalent to the four ICC residential inspector certifications, as the scope of these prior MCO inspector examinations was very limited in the area of residential inspection.
