Their role is crucial in ensuring that electrical systems comply with applicable codes, regulations, and safety standards before construction or installation begins.
What are the requirements for obtaining this registration?
Registered Electrical Code Official Requirements- Hold a Journeyman or Master Electrical License.
- Submit your application for examination.
- Include copies of your state or local licenses and NFPA or ICC certifications.
- Pay all applicable fees.
- Pass the Electrical Inspector or Plan Reviewer Exam.
How do I obtain electrical code official registration?
To apply for your electrical code official registration, contact the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs at 517-241-0199 or visit their website.
Both inspectors and plan reviewers are required to complete state approved continuing education to renew their registrations. Inspectors are required to complete a total of 34 hours of CE. Plan reviewers are required to complete a total of 40 hours of CE. Michigan has limited reciprocity arrangements, check with the board for the most up-to-date information.

Before you may sit for the exam, you must first submit your application for examination. Be sure to include copies of you current licenses and certifications.

After completing all the steps above, PSI will notify the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. They will mail your Electrical Inspector or Plan Reviewer Registration to you.
Which exam do I need to take?
Electrical Code Official Exams are administered by PSI Exams. You must submit an application for examination in order to sit for the exam.
The exams shall include, but not be limited to, questions designed to test an individual's knowledge of the skilled trades regulation act, the current electrical code rules – part 8, the Stille-DeRossett- Hale single state construction code act, any code adopted under section 4 of that act, MCL 125.1504, any code adopted under section 8a of that act, MCL 125.1508a, and the theory relative to those codes.

How do I pass the exam?
