Virginia Refrigeration Contractor License and Exam
Refrigeration Licensing & Exam Prep
Virginia requires all tradesmen to obtain a license before any bidding or work can take place. The state recognizes three different types of Refrigeration licenses. A Refrigeration Contractor license is used in combination with a valid Virginia Contractors license class A, B, or C. A Journeyman or Master Refrigeration license can be obtained without additional licenses. All of our training is offered in an online self-paced format. What type of work can be done with this license?

Journeyman Refrigeration License
A Journeyman Refrigeration has the ability to install, repair, and maintain specific types of materials and equipment in the Refrigeration field. A Journeyman must operate under the supervision of a Master Refrigeration.

Master Refrigeration License
A Master Refrigeration has the abilities of a Journeyman with the added abilities of planning, laying out details, and supervising Journeyman Refrigeration. A Master Refrigeration may work independently.

Contractor
A Refrigeration Contractor license is used in combination with a Contractors License to allow the contractor to bid and complete plumbing jobs within the state. To bid on projects over $1,000, a contractor's license is required.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Master Refrigeration- Pass the Master Refrigeration exam (pre-approval is required)
- 1 year of practical experience as a licensed VA Journeyman Refrigeration OR
- 10 years’ experience in the trade
Journeyman Refrigeration- Pass the Journeyman Refrigeration exam (pre-approval is required)
- Completion of a 2-year program from an approved trade school, technical school, or community college OR
- 240 hours of education/vocational training and 4 years’ verifiable experience in the trade OR
- 160 hours of education/vocational training and 5 years’ verifiable experience in the trade OR
- 80 hours of education/vocational training and 6 years’ verifiable experience in the trade OR
- Earned Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or university and 1 year of verifiable experience in the trade OR
- 10 years’ verifiable experience in the trade
Refrigeration Contractor- Pass the Master Refrigeration exam (pre-approval is required)
- Must also obtain a Contractor's Class A, B, or C License
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Virginia DPOR at 804-367-8511 or visit Tradesmen Board Website.
1 Hour of continuing education are required for each renewal. Also, Virginia has no reciprocity agreements.

Journeyman/Master Refrigeration
- Total Questions: 50
- Passing Score:
- 35 correct (Journeyman)
- 37 correct (Master)
- Time: 150 minutes

Topics include: Standards of Practice; Standards of Conduct; Renewal and Reinstatement; Definitions; Qualification for Licensure; Revocation of Licensure; Natural and LP Gas Piping; Pipe Sizing; Gas Piping Controls; Testing
Class A & B
Depending on the license classification, you will also need to pass the general, advanced, and Virginia portions of testing. Learn more about the exam details. Class C contractor's only need to complete the 8 hour pre-licensing course, not pass an additional exam.
How do I pass the exam?
The Virginia exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Exam Prep is under development.
