Plumbing Inspector
Plumbing Inspectors are responsible for conducting inspections of plumbing systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure compliance with the Michigan Plumbing Code and applicable regulations. They inspect various plumbing components, including pipes, fixtures, water heaters, and drainage systems, to verify proper installation, functionality, and adherence to safety standards.

Plumbing Plan Reviewer
Plumbing Plan Reviewers are responsible for reviewing and evaluating plumbing plans and specifications to ensure compliance with the Michigan Plumbing Code and relevant regulations. They examine plumbing designs, layouts, and components, such as piping systems, fixtures, and drainage systems, to ensure adherence to code requirements.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Plumbing Inspector and Plan Reviewer Requirements- Hold a journey plumber's license from this state for at least 2 years immediately preceding application; or a current master plumbing license from this state.
- If the individual does not hold a plumber license from this state, he/she shall provide an affidavit of experience from previous and current employers attesting that he/she was actively engage in the performance of plumbing work for 5 years under a licensed plumbing contractor.
- If an individual holds a license as a plumbing inspector and/or plumbing plan reviewer for another state or foreign country with inspector and/or plan review experience in plumbing code enforcement, he/she shall provide to the department proof of licensure and the licensing requirements for that state or country to be eligible to receive approval from the department.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your inspector or plan reviewer license, contact the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs at 517-241-0199 or visit their website.
Both inspectors and plan reviewers are required to complete continuing education to renew their licenses. Inspectors are required to complete a total of 34 hours of CE. Plan reviewers are required to complete a total of 40 hours of CE. Michigan has limited reciprocity arrangements, check with the board for the most up-to-date information.

Inspector and Plan Reviewer Exams are administered by PSI Exams. You must submit an application for examination in order to sit for the exam. These exams test for extensive knowledge of plumbing systems, applicable code, statutes governing the industry and referenced standards.
