What are the requirements for obtaining this registration?

Building Contractor Under Four Stories license RequirementsRegistered Mechanical Code Official Requirements
  • Hold a mechanical license from this state in 3 of the 4 following categories for at least 1 year:
    1. Hydronic heating and cooling and process piping
    2. HVAC equipment
    3. Refrigeration
    4. Fire suppression

  • If the individual does not hold a mechanical license from this state, they shall provide an affidavit of experience from previous and current employers. The affidavit must comply with both of the following:
    • Attest that the individual has engaged in the performance of mechanical work in 3 of the 4 categories for 6 years under a licensed mechanical contractor
    • Attest that the licensed mechanical contractor who supervised the applicant was licensed in the required categories at the time of supervision

How do I obtain mechanical code official registration?

To apply for your mechanical code official registration, contact the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs at 517-241-0199 or visit their website.

Both inspectors and plan reviewers are required to complete state approved continuing education to renew their registrations. Inspectors are required to complete a total of 34 hours of CE. Plan reviewers are required to complete a total of 40 hours of CE. Michigan has limited reciprocity arrangements, check with the board for the most up-to-date information.

PASS THE STATE EXAM

Mechanical Code Official Exams are administered by PSI Exams. You must submit an application for examination in order to sit for the exam.
