A mechanical plan reviewer in Michigan is responsible for meticulously evaluating mechanical plans and specifications to ensure compliance with the Michigan Mechanical Code and relevant regulations. They carefully examine the design, layout, and components of mechanical systems, such as HVAC, plumbing, and piping, verifying adherence to code requirements. Their role involves interpreting codes accurately, providing guidance to ensure compliance, and communicating any deficiencies or necessary revisions to ensure the plans meet the necessary standards for approval.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Mechanical Inspector and Plan Reviewer Requirements- Hold a mechanical license from this state in 3 of the 4 following categories for at least 1 year:
- Hydronic heating and cooling and process piping
- HVAC equipment
- Refrigeration
- Fire suppression
- If the individual does not hold a mechanical license from this state, they shall provide an affidavit of experience from previous and current employers. The affidavit must comply with both of the following:
- Attest that the individual has engaged in the performance of mechanical work in 3 of the 4 categories for 6 years under a licensed mechanical contractor
- Attest that the licensed mechanical contractor who supervised the applicant was licensed in the required categories at the time of supervision
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your inspector or plan reviewer license, contact the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs at 517-241-0199 or visit their website.
Both inspectors and plan reviewers are required to complete continuing education to renew their licenses. Inspectors are required to complete a total of 34 hours of CE. Plan reviewers are required to complete a total of 40 hours of CE. Michigan has limited reciprocity arrangements, check with the board for the most up-to-date information.

Which exam do I need to take?
Inspector and Plan Reviewer Exams are administered by PSI Exams. You must submit an application for examination in order to sit for the exam. The exams for registration as a mechanical inspector or plan reviewer tests for extensive knowledge of mechanical systems, applicable code, statutes governing the industry and referenced standards.
