Maryland HVACR License & Exam Prep
HVACR Licensing & Exam Prep
Maryland requires all tradespeople to obtain a license before any bidding or work can take place. The Maryland HVAC license is available at Journey and Master levels. A Journeyman license must be under the direction and supervision of a HVACR Master licensee at all times. All of our training is offered in an online self-paced format. What type of work can be done with this license?

HVACR Journeyman License
A Journeyman HVACR Contractor is authorized to provide heating, ventilation, air conditioning, or refrigeration services while under the direction and control of a licensed contractor.

HVACR Master License
A Master HVACR Contractor is authorized to install, maintain, alter, remodel, or repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and hydronic systems.
What are the Maryland HVACR licensing requirements?
HVACR Journeyman LicenseApplicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Have a State of Maryland HVACR Apprentice license for a period of at least three (3) years; and
- During that period completed at least 1,875 hours of training in providing HVACR services under the direction and control of a licensed HVACR contractor; OR
- Successfully completed an Apprentice program related to HVACR which was approved by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council.
- Be approved by the Board for an examination for a license in the Limited Contractor, Master Restricted Contractor, or Master Contractor categories prior to August 1,1997.
- Have a combination of time licensed as an apprentice and the successful completion of a course of study in HVACR work that totals (3) years. (The course of study must be approved by PSI)
All applicants must also pass a comprehensive written examination
HVACR Master LicenseApplicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Have been licensed and regularly employed as a Journeyman, Limited Contractor, or Master Restricted Contractor (any specialty) or HVACR instructor for at least three (3) years
- Have been regularly and principally employed in providing HVACR services under the direction and control of a Master Contractor, licensed by the HVACR Board
- Have been employed to provide HVACR services for at least 1,875 hours prior to applying to take the examination
- Pass a comprehensive written examination
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Maryland Board of HVACR Contractors at 410-230-6196 or visit the Board Website.
No continuing education is required for each renewal. Also, Maryland has reciprocity agreements with Delaware and Virginia.

Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam

The Maryland exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
