Home Improvement Contractor and Salesperson Licensing & Exam Prep
The State of Maryland requires all tradespeople to obtain a license before any bidding or work can take place. Home Improvement Contractor and Salesperson licenses may be obtained through the state. These licenses are administered by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC). All of our training is offered in an online self-paced format. Home Improvement Contractor
A Home Improvement Contractor may perform or agree to perform a home improvement for a homeowner. Home Improvement work includes alteration, remodeling, repair or replacement of a building or part of a building used as a residence. Home improvement also includes work done on individual condominium units. Home improvement does not include work done on apartment buildings that contain four or more single family units or work done on the commonly owned areas of condominiums

Home Improvement Salesperson License
A Home Improvement Salesperson may only be licensed to represent up to two licensed contractors in the selling of home improvements.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Home Improvement Contractor and Salesperson- Certificate of Good Standing
- Two years of experience in home improvement work, construction and/or related education (Home Improvement Contractor Only)
- Proof of financial solvency based on the scope and size of their business
- A certificate of trade name registration
- Proof of current $50,000 liability insurance
- Pass corresponding examination
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) at 410-230-6309 or visit the Board Website.
No continuing education is required for each renewal. Also, Maryland has no reciprocity agreements.

After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Obtain pre-approval by completing the Examination Registration form in the PSI bulletin. Send the completed form to PSI and wait up to 10 business days for approval to sit for the exam, then schedule a time to sit for the exam. Contact PSI at 855-898-0715 to begin this process. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam
After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through Maryland Home Improvement Commission to obtain your Maryland Home Improvement License. How do I pass the exam?
The Maryland home improvement exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
