Limited Electrician Low Energy License

Need to obtain your Limited Electrician License in Maine? Electrical limited licenses can be obtained in classifications. Both licenses require applicants to pass an examination, and the licenses are governed by the State Electrical Board of Maine. Qualifications to obtain and renew the licenses are detailed below.

What type of work can be done with this license?

Limited Electrician Low Energy License
  • Limited Electrician Low Energy License

    Low Energy Electricians are permitted to perform the installation, maintenance, alteration and testing of fire alarm circuits and equipment including NOT limited to telephone, radio, computer and data electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, thermostats, apparatus, raceways and conduit, or any part thereof, NOT to exceed ninety-eight (98) volts.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

  • Transcript(s) demonstrating completion of 45 hour courses each in:
    1. Electricity I;
    2. Electricity II;
    3. Electronics I;
    4. Blueprint Reading;
    5. Controls I;
    6. A current National Electrical Code course;
  • Affidavit(s) demonstrating 4,000 hours of work experience, at least 2,000 hours of which is in low energy installations;
  • Examination application completed, signed and dated;
  • Pass the Maine Limited Electrician Low Energy Exam with a score of 70% or higher.

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Maine Electrician's Examining Board at (207) 624-8603 or visit their website.

The state requires 15 hours of continuing education every 3 years in order to renew your license. For questions regarding reciprocity agreements please contact the State Professional and Financial Regulation board directly at (207) 624-8500.

Obtain PRE-APPROVAL

Approval is required to sit for the exam, you must apply through the State of Maine Electrician’s Examining Board. This application can be submitted online. Once you are approved, you can take the exam on Prov’s website.

PASS THE STATE EXAM
