HVAC/Refrigeration
HVAC means heating, ventilation, air conditioning, ducted systems, or any type of refrigeration used for food processing or preservation. "HVAC" includes all natural, propane, liquid propane, or other gas lines associated with any component of an HVAC system. Refrigeration means any system of refrigeration regardless of the level of power, if such refrigeration is intended to be used for the purpose of food processing and product preservation and is also intended to be used for comfort systems. “Refrigeration” includes all natural, propane, liquid propane, or other gas lines associated with any component of refrigeration.

Journeyperson HVAC/Refrigeration License
According to the state of Iowa, a Journeyperson is any person, other than a master, who, as a principal occupation, is engaged as an employee of, or otherwise working under the direction of, a master in the design, installation, and repair of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems, as applicable.

Master HVAC/Refrigeration License
A Master is any person who works in the planning or superintending of the design, installation, or repair of plumbing, HVAC/Refrigeration, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems and is otherwise lawfully qualified to conduct the business of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems, and who is familiar with the laws and rules governing the same.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyperson HVAC/Refrigeration- Be at least 18 years old.
- Provide documentation of any criminal convictions. Applicants with a felony conviction will be subject to review by the board to determine eligibility for licensure.
- Submit a completed, signed, and notarized application form
- Pass the Iowa Journeyperson HVAC/Refrigeration exam
- Provide the board with one of the following:
- Evidence of having completed at least four years of practical experience as an apprentice AND proof of successfully passing the Iowa journeyperson examination for each trade discipline requested. The four years of practical experience required must be from an apprenticeship training program registered by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship.
OR - Evidence that the applicant possesses a master level license in the same discipline from another jurisdiction.
- Evidence of having completed at least four years of practical experience as an apprentice AND proof of successfully passing the Iowa journeyperson examination for each trade discipline requested. The four years of practical experience required must be from an apprenticeship training program registered by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship.
Master Refrigeration- Be at least 18 years old.
- Provide documentation of any criminal convictions. Applicants with a felony conviction will be subject to review by the board to determine eligibility for licensure.
- Pass the state of Iowa Plumbing and HVAC/Refrigeration Systems Board master licensing examination for the applicable discipline. To be eligible to sit for the exam, you must have either
- A Master license in another jurisdiction; or
- A Journeyperson license with two years of work experience.
- Pay the master level licensing fee.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board at (515) 281-7689 or visit Board Website.
Up to 16 hours of continuing education is required for license renewal. Also, Iowa has no reciprocity agreements with HVAC/Refrigeration licenses.

How do I pass the exam?
The Iowa exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
