Journeyman Electrical License
According to the state of Iowa, a Journeyman Electrician is any person, other than a master, who, as a principal occupation, is engaged as an employee of, or otherwise working under the direction of, a master in the design, installation, and repair of Electrical, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems, as applicable.

Master Electrical License
A Master Electrician is any person who works in the planning or superintending of the design, installation, or repair of Electrical, Electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems and is otherwise lawfully qualified to conduct the business of Electrical, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems, and who is familiar with the laws and rules governing the same.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Electrician- Completed an apprentice program registered or approved registered by the US Department of Labor
OR - Completed a post-secondary electrical program through a board approved community college with a minimum of 6,000 on-the-job training and 2,000 hours of classroom training
OR - Prior to 1/1/1998, been employed as a journeyman with 16,000 documented hours of electrical experience as a Journeyman (a minimum 8,000 hours between 1/1/1998 and 1/1/2008)
Master Electrician- Be a licensed journeyman electrician with a minimum of one year of experience (subject to board approval)
OR - Be a master electrician licensed by the state
OR - Have been employed as a Master Electrician with a minimum of 8,000 hours (a minimum 8,000 hours between 1/1/1998 and 1/1/2008)
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Iowa Electrical Licensing and Inspection Board at 515-725-6147 or visit Board Website.
18 hours of continuing education is required for license renewal every 3 years. Also, Iowa has reciprocity agreements with South Dakota for Electrical licenses.

The first step is to obtain pre-approval for your exam. This can be completed submitting an Exam Approval Application online or via paper application. Upon approval, you will be sent instructions on scheduling the examination through the board’s approved testing provider.

How do I pass the exam?
The Iowa exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
