What type of work can be done the Georgia General Contractor License?

  • General Contractors License

    There are no restrictions on the type of work that general contractors in Georgia can do. However, there are financial limits that they must adhere to. If the scope of the work falls within the scope of electrical contracting, plumbing, conditioned air contracting, low voltage contracting, or utility contracting, a duly licensed contractor must complete the work.
    General contractors are responsible for the construction of private, commercial, institutional, industrial, public, and other buildings and structures. This applies to projects under contract with or engagement directly by an owner. However, there may be exceptions as specified by law.

What are the Georgia General Contractor License requirements?

  • Pass Business Law and GA General Contractor exams (pre-approval is required)
  • Proven work experience: 1 year in the construction industry with a bachelor degree in the field of engineering, architecture, construction management, building construction, or other field acceptable to the division.
  • Proven work experience: 4 years in the construction industry without a related bachelor degree
  • Submit at least one project that you managed and oversaw successfully within the past 5 years. This project should demonstrate your ability to handle general oversight and primary management responsibility.

Georgia contractors license financial requirementsFinancial / Insurance Requirements

  • Applicants must have general liability insurance. The insurance should be at least $500,000 per occurrence. They must also provide a signed, current certificate of insurance with their application.
  • Additional documentation may be requested by the state licensing board to prove financial responsibility.
  • Workers compensation insurance is required in Georgia if you employ 3 or more employees.

  • Residential Basic Contractor License

    Residential Basic Contractors in Georgia are able to perform contractor work relative to detached one family and two-family residences and one-family townhouses not over three stories in height and their accessory buildings.

  • Residential Light Commercial Contractor License

    Residential Light Commercial Contractors in Georgia are licensed to any contractor work or activity performed by a residential-basic contractor and, additionally, shall include such contractor work or activity related to multifamily and multiuse light commercial buildings and structures, and their related accessory buildings and structures, which are:

  • Less than four stories in height;
  • Less than 25,000 square feet in aggregate interior floor space, except as otherwise provided; AND Constructed of wood or light gauge metal frame, brick veneer, prefabricated, or manufactured type of construction;
  • Pre-engineered steel buildings not exceeding 50,000 square feet of interior floor space;
