Journeyman and Master Gas Pipe Fitter
A Journeyman or Master Gas Pipe Fitter is a person who designs, fabricates, installs, tests or operates any nonindustrial type of gas appliance and piping system from the outlet of the meter set assembly, or from the outlet of the service regulator when a meter is not provided, to the inlet connections of appliances, for fuel gases such as natural gas, manufactured gas, undiluted liquefied petroleum gas, liquefied petroleum gas-air mixtures or mixtures of any of these gases; or who introduces, maintains or extends a supply of a gas through a pipe or pipes, or any appurtenance thereof, in any building, lot premises, or establishment; or who ventilates any fixture or appurtenance connected therewith; or who excavates any public or private street, highway, road, court, alley or space for the purpose of connecting any building, lot, premises, or establishment with any service pipe.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Gas Pipe Fitter RequirementsApplicants must meet at least one of the following criteria
- Worked as an apprentice plumber or gasfitter for at least 8,000 hours over at least 4 years
- Graduated from an accredited college or university with a degree in mechanical engineering, and has at least 2 years of practical experience as a plumber or gasfitter as verified by a licensed master plumber or licensed master gasfitter
- Has comparable experience or a combination of education and experience that the Board deems equivalent to the above
- Have any combination of the above requirements that has been deemed sufficient by the board
Pass the required Journeyman Gas Pipe Fitter exam
Master Gas Pipe Fitter Requirements- Have not less than four (4) years of experience as a licensed Journeyman Gas Pipe Fitter

How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection at 202-671-4500 or visit the DLCP website to submit online.
District of Columbia does not require continuing education for Journeyman and Master Gas Fitters. District of Columbia has no reciprocity agreements for Master or Journeyman Gas Fitters.

How do I pass the exam?
The District of Columbia exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! All reference materials must be bound. Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
