Limited Energy & Alarm Contractor Licensing, Education & Exam Prep

A license is required in Florida to bid on any Electrical project. Limited energy / low voltage and alarm contractor licenses are administered by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). To obtain your license, you must first meet experience and exam requirements that are set by the board.

What type of work can be done with this license?

Licensed Contractor in Florida
  • Limited Energy System Specialty Contractor

    The scope of a limited energy systems specialty contractor includes the installation, repair, fabrication, erection, alteration, addition to, or design of electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, thermostats, apparatus, raceways, conduit, and fiber optics (transmission of light over stranded glass) or any part thereof not to exceed 98 volts, (RMS). The scope of work of this license does not include installation, repair, fabrication, erection, alteration, addition to, or design of electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, thermostats, apparatus, raceways, conduit, that are part of an alarm system.

  • Alarm System Contractor I (EF)

    EF – An “alarm system contractor I” means an alarm system contractor whose business includes all types of alarm systems for all purposes. This license also includes all the work permitted by the Limited Energy license.

  • Alarm System Contractor II (EG)

    EG – An “alarm system contractor II” means an alarm system contractor whose business includes all types of alarm systems other than fire, for all purposes. This license also includes all the work permitted by the Limited Energy license.

  • Pass Limited Energy or Alarm Contractor Exam

Financial Requirements

  • Provide a personal credit report and a personal financial statement demonstrating a positive net worth.
  • Certification of Insurance Coverage
  • Provide a Business Credit Report and Business Financial Statement showing a net worth of at least $5,000.
Electrical Contractor RequirementsEducation/Experience Requirements

Applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria to be eligible for a Specialty Electrical License:

  • Must have three (3) years of management experience in the trade of electrical/alarm/specialty contracting within the last six (6) years immediately preceding the filing of the application
  • Must have four (4) years of experience as a foreman, supervisor or contractor in the trade within the last eight (8) years immediately preceding the filing of the application
  • Must have six (6) years of comprehensive training, technical education or supervisory experience associated with an electrical or alarm contracting business within the last 12 years immediately preceding the filing of the application; or must have at least six (6) years technical experience in electrical or alarm system work with the Armed Forces or a governmental entity within the last 12 years immediately preceding the filing of the application; or have a combination of these qualifications totaling six (6) years of experience
  • Must be licensed as an electrical professional engineer for three (3) years within the last 12 years. Provide a copy of current electrical professional engineer license and transcripts showing electrical engineering work
  • Must have a combination of experience listed in 1-3 above totaling 6 years within the last 12 years

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Florida DBPR at 850-487-1395 or visit the Contractor's Board Website.

If you have taken a similar exam for a license in another state, you may be able to have the Florida exam. Here you can find a full list of accepted exams from other agencies.

7 hours of continuing education are required each renewal. Electrical licenses expire on August 31st of even years.

Exam Pre-Approval

The first step is to obtain pre-approval for your exam. This can by submitting your application for examination to the DBPR.

PASS THE STATE EXAM

To schedule your electrical exam, first obtain pre-approval with DBPR by visiting myfloridalicense.com or by calling 850-487-1395. After you have been approved, you can schedule your exams with Pearson VUE at 888-204-6230.

You must pass both the trade and business sections to obtain a license.
