Residential Plumbing Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep
Arizona Plumbing Contractor Licenses are split into Residential, Commercial, and Dual certifications. The state previously required applicants to pass a Statutes and Rules exam, and that has been replaced by the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE) provided by the Registrar of Contractors.

R-37R Residential Plumbing Contractor, including Solar
A R-37R Residential Plumber can install and repair water and gas piping systems, fire protection as it relates to water sprinkler systems, and sewage treatment systems; including all fixtures, vents, and devices common to the industry, as well as solar applications. This scope includes all R-37R sub-classifications.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Exam & Experience- Pass PSI Residential Plumbing Contractor Exam
- Complete the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE) provided by the board
- Submit 4 years hands on and/or managerial experience
- Submit Background Check for every person named on the License Application Form
- Form a legal entity
Bond LimitsResidential Plumbing Contractor (R-37R)
- Obtain a $4,250 surety bond for less than $375,000 Gross Volume and a $7,500 for anything greater.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Arizona Registrar of Contractors at 803-896-4686 or visit their website.
The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Arizona has reciprocity agreements with California, Nevada, and Utah.

Arizona Contractors must pass one examination and the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE).

R-37R Residential Plumbing Contractor Examination
- Total Questions: 100
- Passing Score: 70% correct
- Time: 240 minutes

Topics include: Drainage Waster and Vents; Indirect Waste; Water Supply Systems; Backflow Prevention; Roof Drains and Storm Drainage Systems; Plumbing Fixtures (including water heaters and accessibility); General Knowledge and General Regulations; Specialty Plumbing, Interceptors, and Traps; Isometric Analysis; Fuel Gas; Septic and Sewer; Fire Sprinklers; Excavation
Applicants will take computer-based training about applicable Arizona statutes and rules and then be tested on what they learned throughout the training. Unlike the trade exams, this training course and exam is only available online and only offered through the ROC.
How do I pass the exam?
