Arizona Air Conditioning Contractor Licenses are split into Residential, Commercial, and Dual certifications. The state previously required applicants to pass a Statutes and Rules exam, and that has been replaced by the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE) provided by the Registrar of Contractors. R-79 Residential Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor Including Solar
Arizona Residential Air Conditioning Contractors may engage in the installation and repair of comfort air conditioning systems, including refrigeration, evaporative cooling, ventilating and heating with or without solar equipment. They may also install and repair machinery, units, accessories, refrigerator rooms, and insulated refrigerated spaces, and controls in refrigerators. Excluded is the installation of a new service panel or sub-panel.

C-79 Commercial Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor Including Solar
Arizona Commercial Air Conditioning Contractors may install, alter, and repair refrigeration and evaporative cooling systems.
This classification also allows the licensee to perform installation, alteration, and repair of heating systems of “wet”, “dry” or radiant type. “Wet” systems include steam or hot water boilers and coils, or baseboard convectors, and are limited to 30 PSIG operating pressure of 220° F for hot water and 15 PSIG operating pressure for steam. Dry systems include gas fired furnaces and space heaters.
This classification also allows the licensee to perform installation, alteration, and repair of ventilation systems includes duct work, air filtering devices, water treatment devices, pneumatic or electrical controls, and control piping. Testing and balancing of refrigerant, cooling, heating circuits, and air handling systems.
If necessary, a new circuit may be added to the existing service panel or sub-panel. Excluded is the installation of a new service panel or sub-panel.

CR-79 Dual Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor License Including Solar
The Dual Building Contractor license allows the scope of work permitted by the C-79 Air Conditioning Commercial Contractor AND the R-79 Air Conditioning Residential Contractor licenses.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Exam & Experience- Pass PSI Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (Residential/Commercial) Contractor Exam
- Complete the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE) provided by the board
- Submit 4 years hands on and/or managerial experience
- Submit Background Check for every person named on the License Application Form
- Form a legal entity
Bond LimitsResidential Air Conditioning Contractor (R-79)
- Obtain a $4,250 surety bond for less than $375,000 Gross Volume and a $7,500 for anything greater.
Commercial Air Conditioning Contractor (C-79)
- Obtain a surety bond according to anticipated gross volume:
- $2,500 bond for less than $150,000
- $7,000 bond for work ranging $150,000 to $500,000
- $17,500 bond for work in excess of $500,000 to $1 million
- $25,000 bond for work in excess of $1 million to $5 million
- $37,500 bond for work in excess of $5 million to $10 million
- A $50,000 bond is required for anything over $10 million
Dual Air Conditioning Contractor (CR-79)
- Bond requirements for Dual Licensed contractors are simply the Residential and Commercial bond requirements combined.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Arizona Registrar of Contractors at 803-896-4686 or visit their website.
The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Arizona has reciprocity agreements with California, Nevada, and Utah.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Including Solar Exam (R-79, C-79, CR-79)

Applicants will take computer-based training about applicable Arizona statutes and rules and then be tested on what they learned throughout the training. Unlike the trade exams, this training course and exam is only available online and only offered through the ROC.
