  • Low Voltage Special Systems (under 50 volts)

    Licensees are permitted to work on interior and exterior special systems, cabling and interconnections at commercial and residential locations, privately and publicly owned operating at 50 volts or less; includes telecommunications systems; fire alarm systems, CATV systems; audio and visual systems; security systems; door and gate operated control circuits; temperature control circuits, other low voltage specialty systems operating at 50 volts or less; Does not include interior or exterior wiring of circuits operating above 50 volts.

What are the requirements to getting an Alabama Low Voltage Special Systems License?

  • Submit the signed and notarized application for approval to site for the exam
  • According to the state, "Persons applying for a statewide Low Voltage examination must demonstrate a minimum of 8,000 hours’ experience that shows that you have designed, planned, laid-out and directly supervised electrical construction activities and the installing of electrical components."
  • Applicant may substitute one year of education in electrical curriculum for one-half year electrical experience for a maximum of 2,000 hours of the required 8,000 hours of experience. The applicant must submit a copy of the diploma, certificate, or transcript.
  • Applicant must obtain a passing score on the Alabama Low Voltage Special Systems Examination

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your Low Voltage Special Systems license, visit the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board website and submit an application. Alabama does not require continuing education for this license.
