If you’re the type of person who loves helping others feel good about themselves, becoming an esthetician is a great career choice. In this rewarding profession, you can provide a range of services aimed at maintaining healthy skin and helping clients feel attractive and confident.

Once you’ve graduated from a board-approved school, passed written exams, and obtained certification from the Oregon Health Authority Board of Certified Advanced Estheticians, you must renew periodically to continue practicing legally. What are the requirements for renewal, and what happens if your certification expires?

When and How to Renew Your License

Continuing education (CE) is a great way to refresh your knowledge, learn about industry advances that help you better serve your clients, and stay up-to-date with changing rules and regulations to maintain safety and compliance. It’s also a requirement to maintain your advanced esthetician certification in Oregon.

Specifically, you must complete five hours of approved CE each year to qualify for renewal (except for the first renewal after obtaining your certification). Certificates are valid for one year, expiring on the last day of the month one year after they were issued.

Approved CE

Continuing education for this certification must be related to advanced nonablative esthetics and may include the following subjects:

  • Laws and rules
  • Infection control
  • Professional ethics
  • Business practices

When you apply for renewal, you must report CE through acknowledgment or signature. Although you’re not required to provide a certificate of completion as proof, you may be subject to a random CE audit. For this reason, you are required to maintain records of CE completion as proof for five years following certification renewal.

Self-study is accepted, but you must fill out a Certified Advanced Estheticians Self-Study CE Verification form and keep it for your records. Self-study must relate to the appropriate subject matter.

Other Requirements

In addition to completing CE, you must attest to current first aid and CPR training. As of July 1, 2025, you must also attest to current bloodborne pathogens (BBP) training. You are not required to submit proof of attestations during certification renewal, but you should maintain records in case of an audit.

You should receive a renewal application approximately six weeks before your certification expires. You cannot renew online more than 45 days before your expiration date or after your license has expired. If your license expires, you must complete an Authorization Holder Information Update form and mail it in with renewal and late fees.

What Happens if Your Certification Expires?

If your advanced esthetician certification expires, you are no longer legally permitted to practice. Continuing to do so could result in fines and suspension of your certification. You can still renew after expiration by filing a late renewal form and paying renewal and late fees.

Finding the Best CE Program

Completing CE as a working professional can be challenging. The best programs offer 24/7 online access that supports self-paced learning on your schedule. You should look for courses that include an instant Certificate of Completion for your records.
