Cosmetologists offer a range of services, including hair care and styling, manicures, pedicures, and skin care services. Even more valuable, however, is the confidence and self-worth they give every client. Since this pursuit is both creative and technical, it’s no wonder so many professionals choose careers in cosmetology. 

As a practicing cosmetologist, you already know you are required to obtain a license from the Kansas Board of Cosmetology to legally operate in the state. After completing 1,500 hours of approved courses and passing your state exam, you might think that your cosmetology training is complete. 

That’s not the case, however. You will have to renew your license periodically to continue practicing your trade. Here’s what you need to know about renewing your cosmetology license in Kansas. 

When Do Licenses Expire?

Once you have obtained a cosmetology license, it will remain valid for two years, expiring on the last day of the month in which it was issued two years earlier. You may apply for renewal online, by email, or by regular mail. 

If you fail to renew your license before the expiration date, you may not legally practice. However, you have up to six months following expiration to complete and submit your renewal application, along with any required fees (including delinquency fees).  

After six months, you will have to apply for reinstatement. This entails the same requirements as renewal, plus additional delinquent and penalty fees. 

As a cosmetologist, esthetician, electrologist, or manicurist in Kansas, you are not required to complete continuing education (CE) courses to renew your license. Even so, it’s common for professionals to continue learning in order to provide the best services to clients. 

Only cosmetology instructors are required to complete CE as part of the license renewal process, and they must complete 20 hours of approved education in the following topics: 

• Teaching skills and methods (10 hours) 
• Health and sanitation (5 hours) 
• Practice of cosmetology, nail technology, esthetics, or electrology (5 hours) or additional teaching skills and methods (5 hours)

State Testing for License Renewal

Initially obtaining a cosmetology license requires that you pass both a written and practical exam. For renewal, you will take only a written exam. This test includes 20 questions designed to assess your knowledge of state rules and regulations. You must answer at least 75% of the questions correctly to pass and renew your license.
