There’s something special about providing services that help people look and feel their best. Whether you’re a hairstylist or a makeup artist — or whether you focus on nail care, skin treatments, or facial hair grooming — you can transform your clients’ appearance and give them the confidence to face the world.

Before you become a practicing cosmetologist, you have to obtain a license from the Louisiana Board of Cosmetology. What are the requirements for this license, and how can you get started? Here’s what you need to know.

Requirements for a Cosmetology License in Louisiana

Most skilled trades have minimum age requirements, and cosmetology is no different. You must be at least 16 years old to become a cosmetologist, and you must first complete 10th grade or obtain an equivalent certification.

Additionally, getting a cosmetology license in Louisiana requires you to attend cosmetology school. You are required to take 1,500 hours of state-approved cosmetology courses.

Once you have completed these requirements, you must pass two exams. The first is a practical exam designed to test your skills, where you will perform specific tasks on a mannequin head. The board requires you to bring your own supplies to this test.

You must also pass the Louisiana Cosmetology Exam, which is designed to test your knowledge.

What to Expect From the Cosmetology Exam

The Louisiana Cosmetology Exam is a closed-book test featuring 100 questions on the following topics:

  • Scientific Concepts: Infection control and safety practices; human anatomy and physiology; and basic chemistry used in cosmetology
  • Hair Care and Services: Client consultation, analysis, and documentation; tools used in hair care services; hair design principles and procedures; and chemical services principles and procedures
  • Skin Care and Services: Client consultation, analysis, and documentation; tools used in skin care services; and skin care principles and procedures
  • Nail Care and Services: Client consultation, analysis, and documentation; tools used in nail care services; and nail service principles and procedures

The scientific concepts portion of the exam accounts for 35% of the score, while hair care is 45%. Skin care and nail care services account for 10% each.

You will have 90 minutes to complete the Louisiana Cosmetology Exam. To pass, you must answer at least 75% of the questions correctly.

Convenient and Comprehensive Exam Prep

Whether you’re a student just starting down your career path or you’re a working professional trying to expand your opportunities, a Louisiana cosmetology license can help you take the next step.
