Before you can get started, however, you’ll have to obtain a license to practice from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). First, you must complete 1,800 hours of education and training from a state-approved school and graduate. Then, you must pass the written state exam (no practical exam is required). 

Once you have a license, you may decide to become a cosmetologist, esthetician, electrologist, or nail technologist. However, you are required to renew your license regularly. When do cosmetology licenses expire, and how do you go about renewing them? 

The Ins and Outs of License Renewal

Cosmetology licenses are valid for two years, but the expiration date depends on the type of license you hold. Regardless, you must complete eight hours of state-approved continuing education (CE) and submit proof before you can renew your license. What is the expiration date for your license, and what does your CE entail? 

Expiration Dates

Expiration dates for cosmetology licenses fall on specific dates in years ending with even or odd numbers, depending on the license, as follows: 

• Cosmetologists: December 31 of even years 
• Nail Technicians: December 31 of odd years 
• Estheticians: September 30 of even years 
• Electrologists: July 31 of odd years 

You must meet the deadline for renewal associated with your license so it doesn’t expire and stop you from working. If you miss the deadline, you can have your license reinstated by submitting an application with proof of completed CE and paying a reinstatement fee.  

Cosmetologists who continue to practice with an expired license may face administrative penalties of $10 a day, up to $1,000.

The CE hours you complete will also depend somewhat on the license you hold and could include topics like: 

• The basics of hair cutting 
• Sanitation and sterilization 
• Chemical makeup of hair, skin, and nails 
• Scalp diseases/disorders 
• Domestic violence awareness 

Half of your required eight hours must focus on the scope of practice related to your specific license. The remaining four hours may cover the following topics: 

• CPR or first aid 
• Ethics, statutes, or regulations 
• Equipment use 
• Product knowledge 
• People skills, special needs, or similar topics 
• Marketing
