Cosmetology can be an incredibly rewarding profession. An education in this industry could allow you to operate as a hair stylist, nail technician, or esthetician, for example. Even more appealing is the diverse skillset required to excel in cosmetology. It includes science, artistry, and a desire to care for others and help clients look and feel their best. 

To become a cosmetologist in Illinois, you must first obtain a license from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). This starts by completing 1,500 hours of education and training from a state-approved cosmetology school and passing the Illinois Cosmetology State Board exam. 

From there, you can begin practicing in your preferred field. However, cosmetologists are required to renew their licenses periodically. What does this entail, and what should you do if you accidentally miss the renewal deadline? 

What Is Required to Renew Your Cosmetology License?

Renewal requirements will depend on the type of license you have. All licenses must be renewed every two years, with the license type determining whether you renew on a year ending in an odd or even number. Expiration dates are as follows: 

• Barbers: July 31 of odd years 
• Cosmetologists and Estheticians: September 30 of odd years 
• Hair Braiders and Nail Technicians: October 31 of even years 

The renewal period opens approximately two to three months before the expiration date, during which time you must submit proof that you have completed continuing education (CE) requirements.  

For a cosmetology or barber license, you must complete 14 hours of state-approved CE. Estheticians, hair braiders, and nail technicians are required to complete 10 hours of CE for license renewal. 

For an initial cosmetology license renewal, CE must include one hour of domestic violence and sexual assault awareness. Subsequent renewals may also include this type of education, although it is not required. You may complete up to seven hours of CE via self-study courses, which could cover topics like: 

• Hair cutting and coloring 
• Sanitation and sterilization 
• Scalp diseases/disorders 
• Chemical makeup of skin, hair, and nails 

Remaining hours may be obtained from any state-approved CE provider in a classroom setting. 

Letting Your License Lapse

You cannot legally operate as a cosmetologist with an expired license. If your license has been expired for less than five years, you may apply for reinstatement and pay an associated fee.  

After five years, you must apply for restoration, which will require you to provide certain documentation, depending on your reasons for inactivity (such as military service or working in another jurisdiction).
