Low-Voltage Licensing Requirements

In order to obtain your low-voltage license, there are a few basic criteria that a person must meet. These include the following:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Pass a background check
• Have at least two years of work or managerial experience in the field
• Pass the PSI Low-Voltage Communications System Exam
• Pass the Arizona Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam

The PSI Low Voltage Communications System Exam consists of 60 questions, which applicants are given a 120-minute time limit to answer. The test covers general low-voltage electrical knowledge, with a focus on digital communication systems, fire and security detection and alarms, PA systems, grounding and bonding, and conductors. The exam is open-book, but you must receive a score of at least 70% to pass the exam. 

The Arizona Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam require computer-based training on Arizona regulations, and the assessment’s questions work to ensure that applicants have mastered the course material. Applicants can only take the course and exam online through the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.
