There are several construction projects going on throughout the state of Massachusetts that require oversight from a licensed construction supervisor. If you’re interested in obtaining a license that legally allows you to provide this type of supervision, it’s important to be familiar with the requirements for doing so.

The Types of Massachusetts Construction Supervisors

So, what kind of work does a Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License allow you to do legally? It depends on the specific license type you hold. There are three types:

  • Unrestricted Construction Supervisor License
  • Construction Supervisor License
  • Specialty Construction Supervisor License

Each license comes with different requirements that must be met, such as certain levels of experience.

The Unrestricted Construction Supervisor License

With an Unrestricted Construction Supervisor License, you would be able to oversee reconstruction, alteration, removal, construction, repair, and demolition projects. These projects must pertain to buildings that are smaller than 35,000 cubic feet.

Also included are one- and two-family dwellings and all of the dwelling’s additional accessories, structures, and buildings.

You would also be able to supervise projects involving structures and buildings for agricultural use as well.

The Restricted Construction Supervisor License

A Restricted Construction Supervisor License enables the bearer to lawfully supervise projects that involve the reconstruction, remodeling, alteration, construction, removal, demolition, or repair of residential buildings and their accessories.

The Specialty Construction Supervisor License

Bearers of a Specialty Construction Supervisor License are able to supervise projects in specific trades. These licenses are available for trades that include windows and sliding doors, demolition, insulation, roofing, masonry, and solid fuel-burning appliances.

Requirements for Getting a MA Construction Supervisor License

Before going any further in your quest to obtain your license, you need to make sure you have the required experience.

Experience Requirements

In order to qualify to apply for any of the construction supervisor license types, you must have at least three years of experience in building design and/or construction. The experience has to be full-time and within the past decade.

Any active military construction-related experience may be considered full-time industry-related experience.

Education Requirements

You must have successfully completed a three- or four-year high school or vocational program in the field of building construction if you want that education to count as one year of work experience.

In addition, if you hold a bachelor’s degree in any major, that will also count as one year of experience. If you hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology, science, or architecture, that will count as two years of experience.

Testing Requirements for the Construction Supervisor License in Massachusetts

There are three different state exams you will need to pass in order to obtain your license. The specialty exam varies in topics and length depending on the specific industry to which it relates.

The other two types of tests are both open-book tests, and you will have three hours to complete the one you take. The Unlimited Construction Supervisor Exam has 75 total questions, and the Restricted Construction Supervisor Exam has 60 questions. You must earn a score of at least 70% to pass.
