While anyone in Kansas who wants to perform mechanical work does have to get a license, it isn’t obtained at a state level. Instead, a Kansas mechanical license is obtained through a professional’s local county, jurisdiction, or city.

The scope of work for each of the two types of licenses is similar, with a few differences. You’ll first need to determine which type of license you are qualified to obtain — the master or the journeyman mechanical license.

The Mechanical Master License

This licensure is appropriate for professionals who work for a mechanical contractor and install and/or design mechanical systems. A person who holds this type of license is lawfully able to supervise other workers. Passing a master exam is required for this type of credential.

The Mechanical Journeyman License

If you are or will be working as an employee of a mechanical contractor, you need to obtain a journeyman mechanical license. Anyone pursuing this type of license in Kansas jurisdictions must pass a journeyman examination as well.

Typical Mechanical License Requirements in Kansas

As stated, specific requirements vary from one county, city, or jurisdiction to the next. However, there are some requirements that just about every area has set.

Some jurisdictions also require that applicants have a bachelor of science degree in engineering, construction management, or architecture from an ACCE- or ABET-accredited program.
