If you’re interested in becoming a conditioned air contractor in Georgia, you’ll need to pass two exams and provide certain documentation in order to obtain a professional license.

Conditioned air contractors bid on jobs, offer to perform jobs and perform jobs under implied or express contracts. There are two types of licenses: Class I and Class II.

Class I conditioned air contractor license holders are restricted to contracting work on equipment that does not exceed 60,000 BTU of cooling and 175,000 BTU of heating, while Class II professional license holders can work with no restrictions.

Requirements for a GA Conditioned Air Contractor License

In order to take the two tests that are required for this license, you must obtain pre-approval from the Professional License Board (PLB) to sit for the exams.

Class I License Requirements

For the Class I Conditioned Air Contractor License, you must provide documents that prove your experience. You must have worked as a contractor, under the guidance of a licensed contractor, or in a supervisory position for at least four years.

The state also requires that you provide three letters of reference in sealed envelopes with your application from certain industry professionals. Your references must be registered architects, city or county inspectors, professional engineers, or licensed conditioned air contractors who have worked directly with you.

Finally, you must complete a board-approved heat loss and gain and duct design course. This course must be taken through a board-approved provider. Alternatively, you can complete ACT107 from a Georgia technical or vocational school.

Class II License Requirements

For the Class II license, you must pass the Georgia Conditioned Air Contractor Exam, for which pre-approval is required. You will need to provide proof of at least five years of experience in the field, either as a contractor or under the supervision of one.

Furthermore, you will need to provide three letters of reference, but they must be written by only certain professionals:

  • A registered architect
  • A city or county inspector
  • A professional engineer
  • A licensed conditioned air contractor

These professionals should be people with whom you have worked directly. They should be familiar with your work.

Additionally, to obtain a Class II license, you must hold an EPA Type II or higher certification and complete a board-approved course for Carrier Design 1,2,3 or Manuals N&Q. Finally, you must take a board-approved heat loss and gain and duct design course or complete ACT107 from a vocational or technical school in Georgia.
