Becoming a licensed plumber in Georgia requires you to complete an application, pass tests, pay the required fees, and submit all required documentation to the state licensing board.
There are three types of plumbing licenses in Georgia:
Regardless of which license you will be applying for, there is a non-refundable application fee of $30.
Your application must be completely filled out, signed, and dated. It must also be notarized and be accompanied by your application fee.
A background check will be done through your local law enforcement agency, and the board will look over your experience information (licensure in GA requires that you have at least three years of proven experience). Master plumber applicants must supply proof of five years of work experience.
In addition, you will need to provide three professional references. Specifically, you will need three letters of reference from licensed plumbers with whom you have worked. At least one of them must be a licensed master plumber.
When you get your letters of recommendation, they have to be turned over to the licensing board in a sealed envelope with the signature of the person giving the reference across the seal.
Finally, you must also supply an affidavit of citizenship and immigration documents (if applicable).
There are three different exams for prospective plumbers to take: the Journeyman Plumbing Exam, the Master Plumber Class I Exam, and the Master Plumber Class II Exam.
The Journeyman Plumber Exam has 120 questions and is an open-book test. You will have five hours to complete this exam. The Master Plumber Class I (Restricted) Exam has 144 questions. It, too, is open book, and you have seven hours to complete it.
The Master Plumber Class 2 (Unrestricted) Exam has 168 questions. It’s open book, and you will have seven hours to complete this exam.
Many topics are covered on all three Georgia plumbing exams — however, the two master exams cover content in addition to that on the journeyman exam. Some of the topics that all three tests cover include:
In addition, for all three exams, you will need to be able to calculate volume, area, offset, depth, pressure, radius, weight, and circumference during service and installations.
The topics included in the two master exams that are not on the journeyman exam involve subjects that deal with design, business, and administration.
