Obtaining a contractor’s license in Alabama is quite a bit different than it is in most states. For example , there are individual boards for general contracting, home building, electrical contracting, HVAC contracting, and plumbing

With this being the case, you might feel confused or overwhelmed about how to obtain the right license for your career plans. Fortunately, this article will walk you through the process. Keep reading to learn more about how to obtain a general contractor’s license in Alabama.

Step One: Select the Right Course

Before you can get started on preparing for and obtaining your license, you must have a firm grasp of the type of work you will want to perform. If you want to start and end with general contracting, then an up-to-date course that fulfills those licensing requirements will do the trick.

If, however, you wish to add on a few specialties to your license, you might invest in another course or two. For example, we have a number of roofing, gas, HVAC, and electrical courses and exams that can further expand the amount of work you are able to perform.

Step Two: Make Sure You Meet the Requirements

In addition to passing your state board exams, you will need to ensure that you check off a number of prerequisites as well. Those include:

  • Proof that you are a U.S. citizen
  • Proof that you have a business registered in the state of Alabama
  • Up-to-date general liability insurance
  • A financial statement from the last year that has been approved by a certified public accountant
  • At least $10,000 in net worth
  • Proof of your related experience
  • 3 letters of recommendation from supervisors who are licensed architects, contractors, and/or engineers

With these prerequisites under your belt, you’ll be ready to move forward with your licensing experience.

Step Two: Contact the State Board

For general contracting, you will want to reach out to the relevant state board directly. The fee for licensing is $300. But if you want to become a subcontractor, the fee will be smaller, only $150. Once you have submitted your application and fee, you will wait to hear from the board about your next steps.

Step Three: Take Your Exam

Within a reasonable amount of time, the board will reach out to inform you of the exams you will be required to take. To become a General Contractor, you must take and pass both the Trade exam and the Business and Law exam.

The state will provide you with study materials. But if you really want to give yourself a leg up, you can invest in a professional course as well. Once you have taken and passed your exams, make sure to notify the board to request approval.

Step Four: Be Aware of Renewals

Once you have successfully completed the exam and obtained your certificate, you may think that you are done. Of course, you will be able to begin work immediately. But to set yourself up for success, it’s wise to be aware of and prepare for any renewal requirements that come with your license.
