With a North Carolina Fuel Gas License, you can embark on a fulfilling and meaningful career. Even without a traditional plumbing or heating license, there are a number of types of projects you can work on. Keep reading to learn more about the North Carolina Fuel Gas License, what it enables you to do, and how you can become licensed.

What Kind of Work Can You Do with a Fuel Gas License?

In North Carolina, the fuel piping license was created so that those who wish to contract and install fuel piping without a plumbing or heating license may do so. Specifically, with this license type, you may perform any project that requires you to do the following:

  • Extend fuel piping from an approved source
  • Use piping to provide fuel to any appliances, equipment, or systems in the area

Of course, if you do happen to have a plumbing or heating group 1, 2, or 3 license, you won’t need to get an additional fuel piping license. Fuel piping privileges are already a permitted activity for licensed plumbing and heating contractors.

How Do You Get a Fuel Gas License in North Carolina?

To obtain your fuel gas or piping license in North Carolina, you must first obtain the prerequisite experience. Specifically, you will need:

  • At least one year of experience in the repair, service, maintenance, or installation of fuel piping
  • Half of those hours completed through academic or technical training

If you meet these requirements, you will be ready to begin your application. The process includes three important steps:

  1. Submit an application to the state for pre-approval. Include verification of your work experience and education
  2. Once the application is approved, you will have 30 days to complete your national exam. There are a number of testing centers located throughout the state
  3. After completing the exam, you must apply for your license through the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors

Throughout the process, you will be working directly with the State Board. You might visit their website or give them a call if you encounter any questions or problems along the way.

How Can You Prepare for Your Exam?

Knowing how to get your license and actually succeeding in your efforts are two separate things. In reality, getting your license comes down to one important step: passing your exam. To do that, we recommend that you follow these two expert tips:

Tip #1: Carefully Study Your Course Prep Materials

It may be tempting to give your materials a quick once over before it’s time to take your exam. After all, you’ve been in the industry for a while now, so you might assume that you already know the required information.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of topics that can catch you up during the exam. Details involving erosion control, liens and bonds, and subcontractor pay requirements can all be the difference between a passing and failing grade.

Tip #2: Ask Questions When They Arise

If you know someone who has successfully obtained their fuel piping license, make sure to give them a call if you have any questions about the process. Or, you can contact RocketCert to learn more
