What Kind of Work Can I Do With an MM-98 Mechanical License? 

The MM-98 mechanical contractor license is a combination license that covers a range of installation, alteration, repair, and maintenance services associated with mechanical systems. Contractors with this license can perform all work included under the following licenses: 

• MM-1 for residential and commercial plumbing contracting 
• MM-2 for natural gas fitting contracting 
• MM-3 for heat, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) contracting 
• MM-4 for heat, cooling, and process pipe contracting 
• MS-3 for a mechanical specialty in septic tanks and sewer systems 
• MS-6 for a mechanical specialty in lawn sprinklers 
• MS-12 for a mechanical specialty in fire protection sprinkler systems 
• MS-14 for a mechanical specialty in dry chemical fire protection systems 

You will have to meet certain criteria to obtain this inclusive license, including taking several state exams. 

Requirements to Obtain an MM-98 Mechanical License 

Before you can obtain an MM-98 mechanical license, you must first complete 8,000 hours of work experience over four years. Next, you must pass four state exams, all of which are open-book. For all exams, you must answer at least 75% of the questions correctly to pass. 

The MM-1 Plumbing Exam contains 100 questions on the following topics: 

• Drainage waste and vents 
• Water supply systems 
• Backflow prevention 
• Storm drainage systems 
• Plumbing fixtures, including water heaters and accessibility 
• General knowledge 
• General regulations 
• Interceptors and traps 
• Isometric analysis 
• Septic and sewer 

You will have 250 minutes to complete this exam.  

The MM-2 Natural Gas Fitting Exam includes 100 questions on the following topics: 

• General knowledge and principles 
• Piping 
• Gas sizing 
• Safety and testing 
• Appliances 
• Combustion air 
• Chimneys, flues, and vents 
• Heating systems 

You will have 255 minutes to complete this exam.  

The MM-3 Heat, Vent, and Air Conditioning Exam features 100 questions covering topics like: 

• Motors, controls, and low-voltage wiring 
• Piping 
• Heating and cooling general knowledge 
• Heating and cooling equipment and components 
• Refrigerants and refrigeration 
• Ductwork, ventilation, and exhaust 

You will have 245 minutes to complete this exam.  

Finally, you must pass the MM-4 Heat, Cooling, and Process Pipe Exam, consisting of 90 questions on topics like: 

• General knowledge 
• Steam and hot water boiler systems 
• Process piping and systems 
• Fire suppression systems 
• Controls and components 
• Combustion air and venting 

You will have 235 minutes to complete this exam.
