To legally operate as a limited electrician, you must obtain a suitable license from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. What licenses are available, and what are the requirements for getting them? 

C-6 Limited Electrical Journeyperson 

With a C-6 electrical journeyperson license, you are permitted to work on a range of low-voltage electrical systems of up to 48 volts or eight amperes.  

This includes security alarms and signals, audio and sound systems, video systems, telephone interconnect systems, and more. However, you must work under the supervision of a licensed electrical contractor. 

Before you can obtain a license, you must complete a registered apprenticeship program or at least four years of relevant training and experience. You must also pass two state exams — the Business Law Exam and a Trade Exam. 

The Business Law Exam consists of 50 questions covering the following topics: 

• Licensing 
• Estimating and bidding 
• Lien law 
• Financial management 
• Tax laws 
• Labor laws 
• Project management 
• Contracts 
• Business organization 
• Risk management 
• Environmental and safety regulations 

You will have two hours to complete this open-book text, and you must answer at least 35 questions (70%) correctly to pass. The C-6 Limited Electrical Journeyperson Exam features 55 questions about topics like: 

• Data and telecommunications 
• Video systems (CCTV/CATV) 
• Sound and A/V systems 
• Security systems 
• Fire systems 
• Codes and standards 
• General knowledge, theory, and definitions 
• Safety 

You will have two hours to complete this open-book test, and you must answer a minimum of 39 questions (70%) correctly to pass. 

C-5 Limited Electrical Contractor 

With a C-5 limited electrical contractor license, you may perform the same activities as a journeyperson. You are also permitted to supervise journeypersons and apprentices. 

Once you have obtained a limited electrical journeyperson license, you must complete an additional two years of work or training to qualify for a limited electrical contractor license. Without a journeyperson license, you must complete six years of experience. 

Furthermore, you must pass the Business Law Exam and the C-5 Limited Electrical Contractor Exam. The latter covers the same topics as the C-6 exam but features 70 questions. You will have 140 minutes to complete the test, and you must answer at least 49 questions (70%) correctly to pass.
