For most people, it’s natural to assume that a building they’re walking into or living in is safe for human occupation. As a certified utility distribution company (UDC) electrical inspector, you’ll take on the role of ensuring that is the case for families in your community.

Becoming an electrical inspector is a prestigious and worthwhile career, but it doesn’t come without hard work and preparation. Consider the following information and the steps you need to take to obtain your electrical inspector certification and build your career the right way.

What Is a UDC Electrical Inspector and What Can They Do?

A UDC electrical inspector is responsible for inspecting one and two-family dwellings in the state of Wisconsin. Your certification will serve as proof of your qualifications to inspect dwellings and ensure that all of their electrical installations adhere to published safety standards.

Namely, you are enforcing two administrative codes set by the state’s Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS): Chapter SPS 316 and SPS 324. You are required to maintain records of inspections you complete and provide copies of inspection reports to property owners or their agents, as well as the DSPS.

How Can You Become a Certified Wisconsin UDC Electrical Inspector?

You can become a certified Wisconsin UDC electrical inspector in one of two ways. The first is by showing proof of work experience with one of the following licenses:

  • Journeyman electrician license
  • Residential master electrician license
  • Master electrician license
  • Certified electrical inspector residential license (issued by the International Association of Electrical Inspectors or National Fire Protection Association)

If you do not possess one of these licenses, you may obtain your certification through examination. Once you have submitted an application for a license and paid the required fees, you will be made eligible to take the UDC Electrical Inspector Exam

The DSPS administers the open-book test. It lasts three hours and is comprised of 90 questions covering the following Wisconsin administrative codes:

  • SPS 305
  • SPS 316
  • SPS 320
  • SPS 324

In addition to these, the test also includes questions pertaining to the 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC).

Printed notes are permitted in the exam room, but they’ll need to be three-hole punched and put within a binder or a bound code book. With or without reference materials, you need a score of 70% to pass the exam, and you must submit proof of a passing score before you can receive your certification.
