Being a plumbing contractor in New Mexico is a great career with job security, longevity, and the chance to help others while expanding your own financial potential. Many people choose this route because of its clear advantages.

Whether you’re thinking about switching careers or taking up this trade after high school, you need to know the requirements to make it happen. Discover how to obtain a plumbing contractor license in New Mexico and turn your professional dreams into reality.

What Projects Can MM-1 Licensed Plumbers Participate In?

With an MM-1 license from the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department’s Construction Industries Division, you can work on a variety of projects that involve installing, maintaining, repairing, and altering plumbing fixtures and piping. These include pneumatic or electric controls and control wiring up to 24 volts, concrete supports, and water heating systems below 30 p.s.i. or 400,00 b.t.u./hour input.

There are limitations to what MM-1 licensed plumbing contractors can do. For example, you won’t be allowed to handle the installation of natural gas-fired appliances or work with natural gas piping — you’ll need different licenses for this purpose.

Steps to Obtaining Your New Mexico Plumber’s License

There are several steps involved in the process of obtaining your MM-1 plumber’s license. Before you can consider applying for licensure, you must gain at least four years or 8,000 hours of plumbing experience.

You also need to hold a journeyman license and become what New Mexico refers to as a “qualifying party.” To become a qualifying party, you must own a business that employs at least one journeyman plumber.

Finally, New Mexico requires that you pass two exams, the first of which is the MM-1 Plumbing exam offered by PSI. This 250-minute open-book exam features 100 questions. Applicants must get 75 of them correct for a passing score. The MM-1 exam covers a variety of practical plumbing topics, including:

  • Drainage waste and vents
  • Water supply systems
  • Backflow prevention
  • Storm drainage systems
  • Plumbing fixtures (including water heaters)
  • Accessibility
  • Industry regulations
  • Isometric analysis
  • Interceptors and traps
  • Septic and sewer

The second exam you’ll take is the Business and Law exam. This 130-minute open-book test features 50 questions and requires a score of 75% to pass. Questions on this exam cover the following topics:

  • Licensing requirements
  • Estimating and bidding
  • Business organization
  • Financial management
  • Tax and labor laws

Once you pass the exam, you are free to apply for state licensure.
