Roofing is one of many skilled trades that offer opportunities for stable work and good pay, not to mention the potential to become your own boss. Experienced professionals will always be in demand in this field, with both residential and commercial customers in need of functional roofing to protect against the elements.

If you love the idea of a career where you get to work outdoors and perhaps even own a business, becoming a roofing contractor could be exactly what you’re looking for. In the state of Oklahoma, you must obtain a license from the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board before you can legally work as a contractor. Here’s what you need to know to secure your roofing license.

What You Can Do With a Roofing License

With a roofing contractor license, you are permitted to perform a range of activities related to installing, maintaining, and improving roofing. Tasks could include roofing repair, remodeling, renovation, and reconstruction, along with complete re-roofing.

You might alter roofing installations or waterproof roofing. Your license also allows you to bid for jobs, manage and supervise job sites, and supply materials. You may work in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

Requirements to Obtain Your Oklahoma License

There are a few requirements you must meet before you can obtain your roofing contractor license. To be a qualifying party, you must be at least 18 years old and serve as:

  • Owner/officer of a corporation
  • Member of an LLC
  • General partner of an LLC actively engaged in the roofing trade

Further, your business must be registered with the Secretary of State, and you must show proof of general liability and workers’ compensation insurance. Once you have supplied proof of requirements, your next step is to pass the state exams.

The Business and Law Exam consists of 50 questions on topics like:

  • Bidding and estimating
  • Project management and supervision
  • Contracts
  • Financial
  • Labor and personnel
  • Risk management
  • Payroll and payroll taxes
  • Licensing requirements

You will have 120 minutes to complete this test.

The Commercial Roofing Contractor Exam also features 50 questions, covering topics such as:

  • General roofing knowledge
  • Low slope roofing
  • Architectural metal roofing systems and sheet metal flashing
  • Moisture and energy control
  • Repairs and reroofing
  • Safety

You will have 150 minutes to complete this test. For each of these open-book tests, you must answer at least 70% (35) of the questions correctly to pass.
