Requirements for a Master Plumber License

You don’t necessarily have to become a journeyman plumber before you obtain a master plumber license, but it will make the process a bit easier. When you’ve completed an apprenticeship program to become a journeyman, you can apply for your own master plumber license by submitting a certificate of completion, along with proof of two years working under the supervision of a master plumber (following certification).

If you haven’t completed an apprenticeship, you must submit proof of seven years of qualifying work experience. Either way, your application must be approved by the board before you can sit for the Delaware Master Plumber Exam, which you must pass to obtain your license.

Delaware Master Plumber Exam

This state trade exam is open book and consists of 100 questions covering the following topics:

• General knowledge
• Isometrics and plan reading
• Plumbing math
• Drain, waste, and vent systems
• Water supply and distribution
• Fixtures and fittings
• Water heaters
• Fuel gas systems
• Storm and roof drainage
• Safety

You must answer a minimum of 70 questions correctly to pass, and you’ll have three hours to complete the exam.
