When it comes to performing the tasks associated with electrical work, most states require that you obtain a license from a state-run board. Depending on the license, the requirements will vary from one state to the next and could include education, experience, proof of insurance, and more.

That said, you may want to acquire a national certification to become an inspector in your field. Endorsements issued by the International Code Council (ICC) confirm that you’re qualified to perform certain types of inspections.

With an E2 Commercial Electrical Inspector Certification, you are eligible to inspect the installation or alteration of electrical systems. However, before you can obtain a license to perform such duties, you must first pass the Commercial Electrical Inspector – E2 exam to prove your knowledge and skill in this field.

What does this ICC contractor/trade exam include? How can you best prepare for and pass the test?

Understand Licensure Requirements

The first thing you need to know is that this is a national exam designed to ensure standards for knowledge are met across all states. That said, passing the exam alone is not typically enough to obtain a state-issued license.

Many states have additional requirements. You may or may not have to apply with a local or state board prior to national testing. There could be legal and financial requirements, as well as requirements related to continuing education and periodic license renewal, say every 1-2 years.

The point is that you need to understand the criteria for your state before you get started.

What’s Included in the Exam?

ICC national exams are open book, including the Commercial Electrical Inspector – E2 exam. You’ll be allowed to reference the current NFPA 70: National Electric Code (NEC), covering comprehensive U.S. regulations for electrical installation and safety.

Topics covered in the exam include:

  • General requirements
  • Branding circuit and feeder requirements
  • Services
  • Wiring methods and distribution systems
  • Special equipment
  • Special occupancies
  • General use equipment

The test consists of 80 questions, and you must answer a minimum of 75% (or 60 questions) correctly to pass. You’ll have 210 minutes (or 3.5 hours) to complete the exam.

How to Prepare for Testing Success

The best option to pass your exam on the first try is with a comprehensive online exam prep program designed for working professionals. The convenience of 24/7 online access allows for self-paced learning that works with your schedule.

Although you can’t access online resources during testing, bundles include physical exam books that can be tabbed and highlighted for easy reference.
